County created by
the General Assembly of Virginia in 1648 during the period of rapid population growth
and geographic expansion. Settlements in this area ranging from northern neck around
1635. Originally known as the district Chickacoan India, the first appearance of
the name of Northumberland in the colonial records in 1644. The following year,
John Mottrom Burgess served as the first for the region in the House of Burgesses,
which met in the capital of Virginia Colony at Jamestown.
Drastically reduced the size of the county in 1651 and 1653 as Lancaster County and Westmoreland County, respectively, which is carved out of it.

Northumberland has a varied
landscape. Low and
flat coastal areas and mountainous land
up the hill to the
west and northwest. Cheviot
hills and the Whin
sill is formed of
igneous rocks, especially granite. There are also
areas of limestone Carbon both sides of the Whin sill and the coal mines in
the south east of the county. Farne Islands
beaches are igneous
rocks. The climate in Northumbria,
especially in the highlands resulted in the coldest
regions in the UK.
Along the coast, higher
temperatures and rainfall pulp is much lower.
The main rivers are
the tricks that lasted for 40 miles east of the
Cheviot Hills to
the sea in amble
and Warkworth Harbour
and Castle. This
